As 2021 is coming to an end, I am reflecting on the blur that was trying to find a job during a pandemic, graduating over zoom, and in the heat of it all, jumping into the unknown: TECH! Throughout this process, I learned there is no place like home.
When I was 17 years old, fresh out of high school, I moved to New York City. I had no idea what I wanted to do. All I knew was that I felt like an outcast in Rhode Island. I thought I was meant to do more than what the smallest state in the U.S.A. had to offer me. I spent a couple years trying to figure myself out, meeting new people, trying to feel important, and helping my friends with their new business quests. Then when the old spiderwebbed gears in my mind slowly moved to the idea that I had found what I was meant to do with my life: public relations. At this time, I was networking, reaching out to people I had just met in hopes they can help my friends gain some social attention. I was told that I would make a very good public relations professional by my friend who was just about to graduate for exactly that. Then the gears were oiled, sparked, and moving toward the path that created the start of my career.
I came back to this little state and started my undergraduate degree in public relations at The University of Rhode Island. You know the old saying, “Good things come in threes”? I can attest to this. Three years, three internships, and about three million hours of freelance creative direction hustle later, I landed this wonderful opportunity. Every job, internship, and moment of self-doubt when I thought I wasn’t where I should have been in my mid- 20’s has led me to the right place and time.
Now, I’m starting a new chapter in my autobiography (working title: Brittney Darcy and the three Ps of life: Passion, Positivity & Pizzaz.) I come from a fashion and art industry background, but this corner of the tech industry has intrigued me. Why? The CEO of Caster Communications, Kim Lancaster is a strong, independent leader. She started this agency when she was my age. This is something I want to be a part of: the changing dynamics of what Tech PR really means for people of all genders and identities. Tech is a new language for me, but as I learn and grow, I become more curious to understand just how complex and compelling this industry is.
With only a few days into my job, the Caster team surprises me every day. They lend a hand when I need one. These are people I can call friends, who I know will support me, and who have the best-tasting office coffee a girl can dream of!
I have been working in PR for roughly 5 years, and I have never been this excited to come to work just to see my beautiful colleagues. Caster Communications is a close-knit family, and I was lucky enough to be adopted. Maybe it was my charm, my skills, or my infectious enthusiasm, but whatever the case, I am excited to grow with an astounding team like Caster!
